New Experiences

I’m sure I have explained it before and I’m sure I will say it again, but I hate to travel. So, I’m sure you could understand my hesitation when I had to make a trip to Manhattan for my latest certification, Strength Calisthenics Certification (SCC). Now that I did it, I’m so happy I did! Thank you to my wife, Elle, to convincing me to do it. 
I got to see and visit places I only ever saw in movies, met new people, and got to hang out with the calisthenics legend Danny Kavadlo.


At the SCC I picked up so many epic calisthenic techniques to improve my game and the performance of my clients. Even I got a little sore! Worth it! At one point I got called on to demonstrate muscle ups, and even got referred to by one of the SCC coaches as having beastly pull-ups. I want to say that the entire class formed a bit of a brother and sisterhood. I even found another Kung Fu brother.


Over all what I’m trying to say is don’t pass on the possibility for new experiences, whether it be in fitness or any other aspect of your life. If you do, then you will miss an entire world of wonder. If I would have passed on this, I would have missed out one the best training experience I ever had.

Reasons to Consider a Trainer

It’s hard to admit, but sometimes we all need a little help on our fitness journey. A lot of people are honestly nervous or scared of seeking out a trainer. But despite what people think, trainers are there to help, not kill, you in the gym. Here are some reasons to work with a trainer:

1) You are working but not seeing results.


There are many reasons this could happen, anywhere from diet to programming. Working with a trainer can help you through the possible plateau by building a plan to fit your goals.

2) You are not sure where to start.


This is very normal, but working with a trainer can take out all the guess work. We help with scheduling the correct cardio, strength training and flexibility training to fit your needs. In time you may want to go out on your own.

3) You are bored with the same old workout.
A good trainer will be able to constantly keep you challenged, while not killing you with the workout. We even work to keep the workouts fresh and consistently evolving with your fitness level.

4) You need motivation and accountability.
The best part in my opinion is the motivation you get to work hard when you are with a trainer. A good trainer will give you the push you need to get the workout done. Trainers also help keep you accountable for your actions when it comes to good health and fitness decisions.

5) You have an injury, Illness or medical condition.


Fitness isn’t just for those who are already healthy. This is where specialized trainers can really help! A trainer can build programs to work around your current limitations. Your medical condition can be worked around.

Drop the Machines for Functionality

I know a lot of people love their workout machines, but here me out.

Let’s look at the machine like the leg extension. You will never really use this motion in everyday life, you are sitting in a fixed position just swinging your leg out. Sure, you do get a burn in your quads but where is the core activation?

Doing a squat is a much better alternative to leg extensions or even the leg press, and yes I know some people have issues with squats. There are ways around it such as a ball squat.

Before you use a machine ask yourself:  how will this help my over all functionality? Even physical therapists stray away from machines for more functional movements. If weights are not your thing also look at the option of calisthenics. Something as ordinary as a pushup has huge benign to your entire upper body.
