Importance of Water

Water is incredibly important to life itself, considering that about 60% of human body weight is water. Let’s think about it— it can take days or even weeks to develop vitamin, mineral, or nutrient deficiencies, but the human body can only go a few days without water. Drinking the appropriate amount of water has many positive benefits for your body such as improved liver function and endocrine gland function, better metabolic function, proper distribution of nutrients in the body, and better body temperature regulation.

One thing the body cannot do is adapt to dehydration. When your body is dehydrated you can experience decreased blood volume, increased heart rate, reduced performance, decreased sweat rate, sodium retention, and increased perceived exertion. Don’t rely on thirst alone to determine your hydration. Even athletes regularly consume inadequate volume of fluids due to sweat loss and exertion.

How much water should you consume when working out? Well, I recommend that you drink 14-22 ounces of water two hours before your workout and 6-12 ounces during every 15-20 minutes of exercise. The goal here is to replace sweat and urine loss. Every day you should really try to drink 2.2 liters of water. Athletes on fat loss programs should add an additional 8 ounces for every 25 pounds they are over their ideal weight. So, get hydrated!
